The Akrotiri peninsula, just northeast of Chania town, has the most convenient cluster of beaches in the region. Kalathas Beach offers fine golden sand, shallow clear water and a small islet you can swim to. Stavros Beach — the filming location of Zorba the Greek — is a calm, enclosed bay beneath a dramatic mountain. Seitan Limania is Akrotiri's wild side: a narrow fjord-like channel of intense blue water, reached by a steep footpath. On the Souda Bay side, Marathi and Loutraki are sheltered, family-friendly beaches with warm shallow water and seaside tavernas. The south coast of Chania is a different world — mountains dropping straight into the Libyan Sea.
