Beaches on the Akrotiri Peninsula — Closest to Chania and Kalathas
The Akrotiri peninsula, just northeast of Chania town, has the most convenient cluster of beaches in the region. Kalathas Beach offers fine golden sand, shallow clear water and a small islet you can swim to. Stavros Beach — the filming location of Zorba the Greek — is a calm, enclosed bay beneath a dramatic mountain. Seitan Limania is Akrotiri's wild side: a narrow fjord-like channel of intense blue water, reached by a steep footpath. On the Souda Bay side, Marathi and Loutraki are sheltered, family-friendly beaches with warm shallow water and seaside tavernas. A quiet base like ours in Kalathas puts every one of them between a short walk and a 25-minute drive — you can swim at a different beach every morning and still be back for lunch.
West Crete Day Trips: Balos, Falassarna, Elafonissi and Kedrodasos
The famous beaches of western Crete deserve a full day each. Balos Lagoon is the postcard of Chania — a shallow turquoise lagoon reached by boat from Kissamos or a rough road and hike. Falassarna is a long, open sandy beach with some of the best sunsets in Crete. Elafonissi is known worldwide for its pink-tinged sand and lagoon-shallow water, and right next to it Kedrodasos Beach offers the same clear water in a wild cedar-forest setting with no crowds and no facilities. All are roughly 1 to 1.5 hours' drive from Chania.
Quiet Coves Near Chania: Agioi Apostoloi, Ompros Gialos and Macherida
Not every good swim needs a road trip. Agioi Apostoloi, just west of Chania town, is a string of naturally protected sandy coves that stay calm even on windy days. In Apokoronas, Ompros Gialos is a tiny hidden cove with deep, glass-clear water — a local secret that most visitors drive straight past. And just five minutes north of Kalathas, Macherida is a small sandy cove by a little lake, quiet and popular with naturists.
Sfakia and the South Coast: Marmara, Glyka Nera and Palaiochora
The south coast of Chania is a different world — mountains dropping straight into the Libyan Sea. From Chora Sfakion, taxi-boats run to Marmara Beach, where white marble rocks meet turquoise water at the mouth of the Aradena Gorge, and to Glyka Nera (Sweetwater Beach), where fresh springs bubble up through the pebbles. Nearby, Filaki is the best-known naturist beach in Crete. Further west, the coves of Gialiskari just outside Palaiochora offer tamarisk shade and calm, clear water.
FAQ: Beaches in Chania, Crete
Which is the closest good beach to Chania town?
On the Akrotiri side, Kalathas and Marathi are among the closest sandy, swimmable beaches — around 15 minutes from the old town. Agioi Apostoloi is even closer, just west of the city.
Which beaches near Chania are best for families?
Marathi, Loutraki, Kalathas and Agioi Apostoloi have shallow, sheltered water and easy access, which makes them the easiest beaches in Chania with small children.
Do I need a car to reach the best beaches in Chania?
For the Akrotiri beaches and the western-Crete day trips, a car makes everything far easier. Balos and Elafonissi can also be reached by organised boat and bus tours from Chania and Kissamos.
What is the best time of day to visit Balos and Elafonissi?
Early morning or late afternoon. Both beaches are at their busiest between 11:00 and 16:00 in summer — arriving early means calmer water, easier parking and better light for photos.
How do I get to Marmara and Glyka Nera in Sfakia?
Drive to Chora Sfakion (about 1.5 hours from Chania) and take one of the small taxi-boats that leave from the harbour in the morning. They drop you at the beach and pick you up in the afternoon. Both beaches can also be reached on foot, but the paths are steep and exposed.
Are there naturist beaches in Chania?
Yes. Filaki, near Vritomartis in Sfakia, is the best-known naturist beach in Crete, and Macherida on the Akrotiri peninsula is a smaller, quieter naturist-friendly cove just north of Kalathas.
